Chance is disappearing from our world: In the digital age, strictly determined algorithms increasingly define the globally applicable standards, down to the smallest detail of our daily lives. Beyond the binary codes, there is first of all a vacuum – and that which we dare to explore here. With the photographs of the series SAME NAME, Sabine Wild explores this artistic „interstitial space“ and partly allows herself to be drawn into the logic of computers

To do this, she first eliminates any image-curatorial instance by having the operating system randomly display images on its hard drive: With random combinations of numbers entered into the search field, the search algorithm brings correspondingly titled photographs from different series to the „surface“. Sabine Wild’s digital nomenclature, which for many years has been based purely on numbers in accordance with the basic technical settings of her cameras, is the decisive factor here. The artist repeated this process for weeks to create SAME NAME. Up to this point she reduces her actions to pure searching, examining, amazement and goes on a time travel of surprise.

Sabine Wild then initiates the central artistic process: The images presented by the algorithm, some of which are astonishingly congruent, are selected by her according to formal and content-related criteria and arranged in new combinations of two. In the process, photographs meet, contrast, complement and enrich each other in a spectacular way – without ever having been thought of as belonging together before. We see graphic combinations, impressively composed worlds of color and unreal scenarios as the result of a randomly driven co-creation of man and technology. Photographs, some of which miraculously merge to form units, reveal connections and worlds. A subtle, detailed interaction of congruities.

SAME NAME raises two central questions: How can the potential of code and art be explored on a random basis? And: In what ways do such experiments enrich an essential element of art – the unbiased, free and experimental interaction – in a world that is becoming more virtual?
